The percentage with a statement of special educational needs is double that occurring nationally. There are high levels mobility of pupils into and out of school at other than the start of Reception or end of Year 6. Currently, no pupils are looked after by the local authority. There have been significant changes to staffing, the governing body and senior leaders in the past year. The school is currently involved in a soft federation partnership with another local school, St Johns Primary. The headteacher shares her time between both schools. A second deputy headteacher has been appointed to start in September 2011, to provide consistency of leadership when the headteacher is not on site. The school has National Healthy Schools status. Government floor targets are now being met. There is onsite childcare that is not managed by the governing body and which is inspected separately."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 16/11/2009

"This is a smaller than average sized primary school and the number on roll has gradually declined since the last inspection. The majority of pupils are White British. The percentage of pupils of minority ethnic heritage is just below average. Most of these pupils are from other White backgrounds. The percentage of pupils who speak English as an additional language is a little below average. The percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals is above average. The percentage of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is average, but the proportion with a statement is well above average. This is partly because the school has a resource base for six pupils with a statement of special educational needs for autistic spectrum disorders. The Early Years Foundation Stage consists of one Reception class. There have been a number of changes in senior leaders since the last inspection. An acting headteacher took up post at the beginning of this term and, in the absence of a deputy headteacher, she is receiving support for three days a week from an associate headteacher appointed by the local authority."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 16/03/2011

"This is an average-sized school. Most pupils are of White British heritage with a much smaller proportion than average from minority ethnic backgrounds. Very few of these are new to speaking English. More than two thirds of pupils attending the school are from families serving in the armed forces, based nearby at RAF Wittering. Consequently, there is very high mobility of pupils throughout the school year. The proportion of pupils known to be eligible for a free school meal is very low. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is below average, although the number with a statement of special educational needs is average. The school has Healthy Schools status. At the time of the inspection three teachers were on maternity leave. The headteacher is retiring later this year; his successor has recently been appointed."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 25/02/2009

"The school is very much larger than average and serves pupils from the inner-city wards of Peterborough. Virtually all pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds, especially the British Pakistani community, but a growing number also come from Portugal and a range of Eastern European countries. English is used as an additional language by nearly the entire school. A great many pupils arrive or leave partway through any year and only about half the number on the school roll stay from Reception to Year 6. Over twice the national average has learning difficulties and / or disabilities. The school offers Early Years Foundation Stage provision in the form of a Reception class. Attainment on entry is exceptionally low. The school holds the Activemark, Healthy Schools and Community Cohesion awards."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 16/03/2009

"St Thomas More Roman Catholic Primary School is a large primary school. As it has continued to expand in recent years, the proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals has declined. Although this proportion is now below average, many pupils come from circumstances of social and economic disadvantage. The proportion of pupils from minority ethnic communities is very high, including growing numbers of children from Eastern European migrant families in recent years. Many pupils do not speak English as their first language and many pupils transfer in or out of the school during their primary education. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is broadly average. The school governors run a breakfast club and an after-school club in order to provide continuous childcare from early morning to early evening. The school holds the Full International Schools Award and the Community Cohesion and Global Dimension awards of the City of Peterborough."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 25/02/2009

"This is a larger than average sized primary school. It serves an area of new housing on the outskirts of Peterborough that is still being developed and includes owner occupied homes, rented accommodation and social housing. The school opened in 2004 and it has expanded rapidly since then. It is now almost full and several year groups are oversubscribed. Most of the older pupils and many younger ones have been admitted from a large number of other schools as families have moved into the area, often part way through the school year. Around 10% of pupils come from minority ethnic backgrounds and English is not the first language for most of this group. When children start the Early Years Foundation Stage in their Reception Year, they have a wide spread of skills and abilities which, overall, are below the levels expected for four-year-olds. An average number of pupils have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, representing a wide range of physical, behavioural and learning needs. Over the past few terms, there has been considerable staff change at senior level, including the appointment of the current headteacher in September 2008."

How Ofsted describes the school:

From report dated 02/07/2009

"Discovery School opened in September 2007 after the amalgamation of Walton Infant and Junior Schools. It is now a larger than average primary school. The percentage of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, including those with a statement of special educational needs, is above the national average. These pupils have, for example, moderate or specific learning difficulties, behavioural and emotional difficulties and pupils at different stages of the autistic spectrum. The percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals is a little below the national average but rising. Most pupils are from White British backgrounds. A small and increasing percentage of pupils are from different minority ethnic backgrounds and a very small number of these pupils are at an early stage of acquiring English. Early Years Foundation Stage provision is provided for children in the Reception classes. There is an onsite breakfast club managed by the governing body. There is also childcare provision run by a private provider that is inspected separately. The school has gained Healthy School and Activemark awards and has recently gained International School status."
